Jennifer Lawrence and her filmmaker boyfriend Darren Aronofsky took their romance to the Venice Film Festival on Tuesday to premiere their new movie Mother!
The Oscar winner wowed fans as she stepped off a boat en route to promote the thriller in Italy, dressed in a black tank-top and plaid slacks. She later hit the red carpet with her Mother! co-stars, Javier Bardem and Michelle Pfeiffer, and her man, the director of the movie, wearing a black and pink dress with a plunging neckline.
She and Aronofsky were careful not to be photographed together, and instead she posed with Bardem and Pfeiffer.
In a new Vogue interview, Jennifer revealed she fell for her director while they were making Mother! but she had no idea what he thought of her until filming had wrapped and the couple started quietly dating.
"We had energy," she told the magazine. "I had energy for him. I don't know how he felt about me."
But it appears her boyfriend was a big fan from the beginning, telling Vogue, "It's such a raw, natural talent she has."
Aronofsky, who was previously engaged to actress Rachel Weisz, also told Vulture he was pleasantly surprised by Jennifer's acting abilities on the set of his new film.
"During the big climax of the movie... she really went there," he gushed. "The producers were freaking out. We had to sort of calm it down and then go for it again. And the thing is, there's so much ability there that somehow she can summon it again and again."
Aronofsky revealed Lawrence was so into her character she "hyperventilated and also kind of threw a rib out" while filming.
And she surprised him on set because she was so relaxed during rehearsals – so much so that he began to worry about getting the performance he needed out of her.
"There were a lot of things that the script asked that I have never seen her do, so I was trying to figure out how we were going to get there," the director explained. "And during the rehearsals, she was very, very relaxed... I really didn't get to know the character until we started shooting, and she showed up."
Mother!, in which Lawrence plays a young wife whose life is turned upside down by creepy guests who invade her home, opens in America on 15 September.
