Record exec Tommy Mottola is now taking credit for his ex-wife Mariah Carey's success early on in her career. Mottola cleared the air in his new memoir "Hitmaker," where he apologized for allegedly being controlling against Mariah, but says he saw a plan for the both of them from the beginning.
"If it seemed like I was controlling, I apologize. Was I obsessive? Yes. But that was also part of the reason for her success."
Mottola believes that because he didn't give Mariah a break early on in her career, she became super successful.
"My feeling was that there'd be plenty of time for Mariah to celebrate just a little ways down the road. I'm not talking 10 years, just a few."
He also talks about the first time he heard Mariah's magnetic voice on her demo, and how it overpowered him.
"An unbelievable energy was running though me, screaming, 'Turn the car around! That may be the best voice you've ever heard in your life.'"
Do you think Mottola is responsible for Mariah's success?
